What is a Postpartum Doula?
A Postpartum Doula assists the new mother in caring for her newborn. During this critical time, the added warmth, love, and care provided by the Doula greatly benefits the future development of your baby. Your Postpartum Doula will teach you important infant care skills and proven methods for keeping your child healthy, safe, and happy. The extra set of hands she provides will allow you to get much needed rest, resulting in a healthier, happier mommy, and in turn, the optimal environment for your newborn to grow and develop successfully.
Some of the many benefits a Postpartum Doula provides for you and your baby include:
A healthy set of coping skills and strategies for a happier baby
Education and support for you to gain greater self-confidence
More restful quality and duration of sleep for entire family
Lessen the severity and duration of postpartum depression
Referrals to local resources such as parenting classes, pediatricians, lactation support and support groups
Improved bonding between parent and child.
Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The postpartum doula offers many services to her clients, but her main goals are to help “mother the mother”, and nurture the entire family as they transition into life with a newborn.
A postpartum doula works with each family individually to find out their particular needs. Some of the duties that a postpartum doula will perform include:
Help with the emotional and physical recovery after birth
Light housekeeping so that mom does not feel so overwhelmed
Assistance with newborn care such as diapering, bathing, feeding and comforting
Light meal preparation
Baby soothing techniques
What is a normal Postpartum Doula’s schedule?
Depending on what you are looking for, postpartum doulas usually work in 8 to 12 hour shifts, although we require a minimum of 4 hour shifts. Postpartum Doula’s are available to provide daytime or nighttime service. Schedule can be modified to fit the specific needs of you and your family.
More and more families are asking for postpartum doula service as a shower or baby gift from family and friends. This is especially helpful for new families who have little or no family support nearby.
Postpartum doula service may also be paid for using money from a family’s flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) dependent on what the guidelines are for their particular plan.
